One year later. Light-years ahead.

Apple has finally started putting up banners 6 days ahead of the WWDC 09. The central theme of the Banners this year seems to be the Mobile Apps and their development considering the new OS 3.0 firmware. The banner reads prominently “One year later. Light-years ahead.” which is symbollic of the App Store that was launched a year ago and had recently completed 1 billion downloads in the short span.

These pictures of the Banners at the Moscone West were put up by Flickr user Adam Jackson.

Touch n Paint

Brushes is a natural media painting application designed from scratch for the iPhone and iPod touch. Featuring an advanced color picker, several realistic brushes, extreme zooming, and a simple yet deep interface, it is a powerful tool for creating original artwork on your mobile device.

Brushes allows you to choose any color (including transparency) using the hue/saturation color wheel. With virtually unlimited undo and redo you never need to worry about making a mistake or backing up too far.

Starting in version 1.1, Brushes records all of your actions when painting. These actions are stored in a .brushes file which you can download directly from your iPhone or iPod touch via Brushes’ built-in web server.

You can open your .brushes paintings in Brushes Viewer, a free application for Mac OS X. Brushes Viewer allows you to replay your paintings stroke for stroke, export them at very high resolutions (up to 1920 x 2880), and even export them as QuickTime movies.

OS 3.0: Re-Downloading Costs

pay twice

With the new iPhone 3.0 software Apple aims to save a bit of  bandwidth of Mobile Companies by charging users for Re- Downloading an App that they have paid for but may have deleted. It is to be noted that this Re Downloading Cost is applicable only in On the GO cases when you use your iPhone or iPod Touch to connect to the App Store. If you were to use your iTunes and your MAC for the same purpose you can easily redownload without paying a penny.

Though some people would end up paying twice for the App despite the warning message. However, the real motive behind this surprise hitch in otherwise sweet OS 3.0 is more aimed to reduce the Network Load than make the user suffer. What I cannot understand is why not restrict the usage to WiFi mode only than block it altogether?

The Newton ‘Virus’

Before you jump off to be excited about this piece of beauty (i.e if you have not already read or heard about it) let me tell you that this is a piece of Art that was a winning entry for an art Competition. The Newton Virus is a fun piece of software that makes your Mac behave as it would do in gravity ie the icons fall to the bottom of screen and move around if you move around your MAC.This feature uses the Motion Sensor technology present in MACS.

On a more serious note , this is not a virus. It is a piece of prank that you can play on your friends MAC and leave him /her truly speechless for the 1 min the virus runs before safely deleting itself. Also it has not been designed to cause any kind of Data Loss so that too is unlikely.

Here is a short video showing what I mean.

iTunes 8.2 supports Palm Pre

Palm has flaunted the Palm Pre’s ability to sync with iTunes for long. However, with the release of iTunes 8.2 , doubts were casted on the continued support. For what has Apple to gain in this unholy alliance.

However, reports have confirmed that despite the new iTunes 8.2 update , the Palm Pre syncs with the iTunes flawlessly.

Palm’s new webOS operating system, which powers the Pre, has media sync as one of its key features. With it, users can connect their Pre to a PC or Mac, select ‘media sync’ on the phone and wait for iTunes to launch on their desktop, says Palm.

This effectively makes it as easy to integrate a Pre with iTunes as an iPhone or iPod.

Zune HD vs iPod Touch

Can it beat the iPod Touch?

Can it beat the iPod Touch?

Microsoft recently announced Zune HD to be released in late 2009.We at Apple Chipmunks know what a disaster the original product was as compared to the iPod.However, this time Microsoft seems to have got their cards right with an HD version of Zune. Here is a quick look at the major revolutionary features:
1) 3.3-inch screen and vivid 16:9 OLED display (480×272 resolution), Multi Touch
2) Integrated HD Radio receiver
3) 720p HD movies, HDTV through the Zune HD & AV Dock (sold separately)
4)WiFi with full-featured web browser including tap-to-zoom technology, built-in accelerometer, and touchscreen QWERTY keyboard.
That sure is a lot of feature packed beast aptly called Portable Perfection.
The main selling points for Zune HD would be in our opinion the HD radio and the Social feature synonymous to Zune.

However the main secret formula of success behind iPods and iPhone is the brilliant App Store support that makes it an altogether brilliant experience.Currently the App Store has over 35,000 Apps ready to be installed on the iPod for use.Microsoft has taken that leaf out of Apple’s book and come up with an all new Zune Store that sells music, but sweetie it’s not the Music that makes App Store famous it is the Apps!

iPod Touch is a mighty device with 32 gigs of memory and many brilliant features.Another and in my opinion the biggest point against Microsoft is that it ain’t Apple.People today take iPods as the ultimate and all time standard music device. For Zune HD to replace the king would be no doubt a daunting task.Only time will let us know if Zune HD is another fallen warrior before the gladiator we affectionately call the iPod Touch.

Best Apple Ads

We all have fallen in love with the recent MAC vs PC ads that seem to have made a mark on the Windows market share. However, these are ironically not the best breed of ads from Apple.A company that has always been known for its niche class marketing strategy and artistic ads, Apple Ads are a class in their own. Here are the Best Ads from each ‘genre’ of Apple Ad Campaign.
